Information about how Indian dance came into existence comes from the ancient scripture "Natyashastra". Whose author is Bharatrishi? The gods requested Brahma, the creator of the universe, to create something that should be such that it can be seen and heard. Brahmaji thought a lot which was the four Vedas. Taking the good things out of it, he made the fifth Veda which was named 'Natya Veda'.
The first performance of this play was done by Bharatrishi on the stage built by Vishwakarma with the help of his 100 sons and Gandharvas, nymphs. Everyone liked the play very much, but the demons got annoyed and angrily asked Brahma why he has shown us weakness in this play.
If you are the creator and father of all of us, then why have some of your creations been shown as good and some as bad? We are very saddened by this. We did not expect much from you. Then Brahma replied to the demons, "I have made this play not only for the pleasure of gods or demons but to show the values of the three worlds. Made to show, those who follow the rules of the policy and are enthusiastic get the fruits of this. It controls those who are undisciplined, encourages the warrior, wisdom to the ignorant, and a source of joy to the mourners. This is connected with the work of all classes of people, high and low, aimed at education, entertainment, and spending time.
Shivaji was very happy to see this play. He commanded his disciple 'Tand' that you teach Bharatarishi Tandavanritya, mother Parvati was also pleased and taught Bharatarishi lasya dance. Over time, Bharatrishi taught other sages and it spread like wildfire in the world.
Parvati taught lasya dance type to Usha, daughter of Banasur. Who taught the women of the city coming to Dwarka after marriage and gradually the women of Saurashtra learned this dance form and this dance form spread all over the country. Thus the story of the origin of dance we get from "Natyashastra".
From this we can know that dance has existed in India since ancient times, it has changed over time. ‘Dance’ also evolved, taking on new forms.
As this art is already associated with religion, it has been performed in temples for centuries and got the name of Devikala, or temple dance. There have been many changes in dance and many types of dance have been born, its names are tribal dance, folk dance, classical dance vs. There were also rifts in classical dance. Bharatnatyam, Kathakali, Manipuri, Kathak, etc., there were innumerable variations of folk dances. In all these dances, religion has been inseparably linked. Tandava and lasya types have been incarnated in both classical and folk.
Thus Indian dance, which was born by Brahma, Bharatarishi made its systematic scripture, that "dance" is being fully developed as a class today, giving pride to India, is being respected.
